Saturday is the final sign-up opportunity in Palm Beach County for people interested in volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s landmark Cancer Prevention Study 3. Here are the details:
Saturday, June 15:
JFK Comprehensive Cancer Institute
4685 Congress Park Drive, Lake Worth
Times: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Think for a moment about what’s proven to date to increase your risk of cancer:

Past study volunteers helped prove the link between smoking and cancer.
Smoking. Air pollution. Pesticide exposure. Heavy drinking. A larger waist size.
And what’s protects from cancer?
Flavonal-rich foods like blueberries, blackberries, dark chocolate, wine and nuts. Nutrients like selenium and food-sourced beta-carotene. Coffee. A healthy body weight. Physical activity.
If you’re telling yourself, “I knew that already,” you can thank the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Studies, and some 233,000 people who have shared details of their lives, habits and health status with researchers since 1953, all in the name of uncovering what causes cancer, and what helps prevent it.

Now’s your chance to help.
The American Cancer Society’s latest trial, Cancer Prevention Study 3, is its most ambitious yet, with a goal of enrolling 300,000 people from diverse backgrounds.
This time, the society’s study will look not just at factors like smoking status, weight and dietary habits, it will collect blood and DNA to allow the study of hormones and genetics as well. Participating requires a long-term commitment: Volunteers will be tracked over 20 years, asked to fill out detailed surveys about health, activity and diet every two years.
The researchers need to enroll volunteers between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer.
If you agree to be a volunteer, plan on spending about 45 minutes, and donating blood.
